Preliminary Task
The main purpose of the Continuity Edit was to create a short film in a way of not break the rules to ensure editing flows naturally containing the 180-degree rule, action match and shot reverse shot, along with various shots and transition methods that we have learned. Our group included myself, the writer and actor, Trung Viet, the actor and lastly YeEun, the director and line producer.

The easiest part of this project was to make a storyboard and write the script, as we were fully aware of what we needed to aim for. As soon as I started this project, I imagined a student who was very mad at his friend who stole his money. But compared to his huge anger, in reality, such a very small amount of money was stolen. And I thought it would be really fun to make this situation into a short video. I decided to be an actor even though it was a huge embarrassment for me. Because this story was my idea and I thought there would be no one who could express the anger better than me. Once the actors were decided, our group nimbly created the brief storyboard and script, because we had a clear way and collaborative attitude. Then we move straight to the take video.
Continuity Edit:
The Minor Offence, 2023
Angry man: WooBin
Collapse man: Trung Viet
Taken by: Ye Eun
Our video undergoes a few trials and errors. Firstly, it was hard to keep the 180-degree rule and the hardest and time-consuming part of this project was acting, because I was the main problem. As it was my first time to do acting, I was very nervous and embarrassed, so it took our group to take the same numerous shots due to my mistakes. However thanks to Trung Viet, the opposite role, he helped me with not breaking the continuity, by telling me my pose and gesture when shots are changing. Also YeEun was greatly helpful too because she gave me a lot of advice about how it would be better to act in certain angles or scenes.
Soundscape Exercise:
The Destiny, 2023
Sound editted by: WooBin
Again, the purpose of the Soundscape exercise was to create meaning, add a soundscape to my section of the short film to create meaning for the audience. Our group included Minh Chau, Chau Anh and me. We divided our section of the short film 1-2minutes to 20 seconds, and I got the first 20 seconds.

Overall, adding a soundscape was highly enjoyable work. I like detailed sounds in every video, so I focused on detail when I added the sound. For example, when the man's pocket watch zoomed up, I made the ticking sound louder, and then the sound decreased as when his watch zoomed out.
Looking for various and plenty of sounds was quite time-consuming, but it was not that hard. However, synchronise sounds with the animation was a lot tougher than I expected. Especially, the sound that I found for walking on the grass was much slower than the animation. Thus I need to fast-wind the sound so that the grass sound matches the animation. But I hate not syncing sound, therefore I tried my best to synchronise the sound with the animation. In my opinion, that persistence made my video far better I think.
In Winter, 2023, I manage to be a director in my first time in this course, it was fantastic. The purpose of this project was work in pairs to produce a 90 seconds short film to showcase everything that I have learnt so far, including camera, editing, sounds, mise-en-scene, genre conventions, narrative structure and more. My partner was Duy Duc, who did all about editing and adding sounds. Meanwhile my job was everything including the idea, story board, shooting, place lending, cast actor but except all about editing.
What did we do first was planned to take a horror video, because horror was obviously suitable for a such short film. But what to film was the main problem. So while we were thinking about what to film with, a great idea suddenly occurred to me. Which was about A man watches a tv sitting on couch comfortably, but becomes anxious and searches his house upon seeing news about a cruel killer escaping, but in reality, the criminal turned out to be the man who was watching the tv. We thought this narrative could work very well and including fresh plot twist.
Our peers left great commitments especially about the plot twist, which was I aimed for, and I'm really proud of it. Also they said our video had clear and understandable narrative, suitable sounds, especially those used to build up tension, and many others. In my personal opinion, I really liked this comment: "The body falling out and the smiling is really well developed as it gives many messages to the audience." because like plot twist, this was what I exactly aimed for to give audience such feelings.
Short Film - Practical Assessment:
Intruder, 2023
Director: WooBin
Editor: Duy Duc
Actor: Albert Kim
Thanks to our actor, we could successfully manage with filming even though there was some difficulties to adapt with camera settings and stuff. But the actually difficulty was time limit. The video should be within 90 seconds however our was almost 150 seconds, which was a huge problem. So we needed to cut some scenes to adjust the time limit. I couldn't cut any scenes but Duy Duc amazingly edited the video with 120 seconds, which is still 30 secs off but to maintain continuity, it was the best we could do. This problem remind that the time managing is important, and I can say confidently this kinds of problems will not be repeated when I make next production.
